Adult deer ticks have no white markings on the dorsal area, nor do they have eyes. They are about 3 mm and dark brown to black in color with black legs. Adults exhibit sexual dimorphism, which means there is a distinct difference in size or appearance between the sexes in addition to difference between the sexual organs themselves. Females typically are an orange to red color behind the scutum.

They are one of the ticks that is believed to transmit Lyme disease, which is currently the most frequently reported vector-borne disease in the United States according to the CDC.
