Opossums are opportunistic omnivores. They eat nearly anything: garbage, pet food, fallen fruit, garden vegetables, and even carrion. That broad diet, combined with their preference for sheltered, dry spaces, makes residential properties a natural target. Porches, decks, sheds, and crawlspaces are among their most common den sites, and they occasionally reach attics by climbing trees or rooflines that run close to the house.

A few conditions that draw opossums close to a home:

• Unsecured trash cans left outdoors overnight
• Pet food left outside after dark
• Brush piles and wood stacks near the foundation
• Fallen fruit from trees in the yard
• Low-clearance gaps under decks, porches, or sheds

Opossums are nomadic by nature, but a female with young will establish a consistent home base. When that happens, the problem often doesn’t resolve without intervention.

An opossum denning inside a crawlspace or under a structure leaves behind a significant mess. Large volumes of droppings create unsanitary conditions and foul odors that can work their way into living spaces. In crawlspaces, their activity can damage vapor barriers, insulation, and ductwork. Nesting and burrowing around foundations, porches, and decks can contribute to wood rot, soil erosion, and moisture intrusion over time.

Opossums can carry parasites including fleas, ticks, mites, and lice, which can transfer to pets and spread into the home. Their droppings are associated with diseases such as leptospirosis and salmonella. While opossums are considered less likely than many wildlife species to carry rabies, any wild animal presents a risk and should be handled by a trained technician.

One more reason not to wait: opossums often move in groups. Spotting one on your property at night frequently means others are nearby. And when a possum dies inside a wall or crawlspace, the resulting odor can be severe and may require professional dead animal removal and deodorization.

Signs You May Have an Opossum Problem

Opossums are active at night, so many homeowners never see the animal directly. Look and listen for these indicators instead:

• Distinctive tracks that resemble small handprints with a thumb-like impression from the opposable toe on the hind feet
• Disturbed trash cans or eaten pet food with no other obvious cause
• Damaged garden plants or evidence of foraging near ground level
• Droppings near entry points to decks, porches, or the foundation
• Scratching, thumping, or shuffling sounds at night from under a structure or inside a crawlspace
• Persistent foul odor near the foundation or from inside the structure, which may indicate active denning or a deceased animal
• Repeated sightings at night, suggesting a nearby established den rather than a passing animal
