Signs of Carpenter Bees Around Your Property

Carpenter bees in Virginia are large, heavy-bodied insects with metallic blue-black coloring and yellow or orange hairs. Their shiny, mostly hairless abdomens distinguish them from bumblebees, which have fuzzy abdomens.

These insects cut nearly circular entry holes into wood, then turn and excavate tunnels parallel to the surface. Females place food and eggs inside separate sections of these nesting galleries.

Look for these signs around wooden decks, fascia boards, siding, and eaves:

Round entry holes: Openings that appear cleanly drilled into bare wood.
Frass and staining: Yellow sawdust mixed with waste material below or around a hole.
Concentrated bee traffic: Repeated flight around one entry point or section of wood.

Females can sting but are generally docile unless handled or threatened. Males may hover close to people and behave aggressively, but they can’t sting. Heavy insect traffic around an opening is a reason to avoid disturbing the area and seek professional bee and wasp service.

How Repeated Nesting Damages Exterior Wood

These bees begin drilling in spring and may return to the same nesting sites year after year. Although one hole can look minor, repeated nesting galleries can weaken decks, siding, eaves, and fascia boards over multiple seasons.

A female stores food and lays eggs inside tunnels running parallel to the wood surface. The insects usually produce one generation each year, and later generations may reuse or expand established nesting areas.

Visible damage can include:

Clean, circular holes cut into exposed wood.
Yellow sawdust beneath active entry points.
Stains left by waste material around nesting openings.
Pecked or torn wood where woodpeckers have pursued immature bees inside galleries.

Woodpeckers can make the damage more noticeable by opening the wood along a gallery rather than entering through the original hole. The affected wood should be evaluated directly instead of estimating the extent of the damage from surface signs alone.

Reducing Future Carpenter Bee Nesting

These bees commonly choose wood siding, bare log ends, and other unfinished areas. After active nesting has been treated, reducing exposed wood can make those locations less suitable for another nesting cycle.

Painting or applying an appropriate finish to bare wood can discourage nesting and reduce potential nesting areas around the property.

Existing entrance holes should be closed only after treatment has addressed the activity inside. Sealing an active opening too early can trap bees within a gallery or cause them to create another exit. Because wood conditions vary, repair or replacement decisions should be based on the material’s condition and the extent of the visible damage.
