What Boxelder Bugs Are & Why They Target Homes in Fall

Boxelder bugs (Boisea trivittata) are about half an inch long with a black body marked by red or orange lines along the edges and wings. They’re not dangerous. They rarely bite, don’t transmit disease, and don’t chew through wood or wiring. The problem is sheer numbers: a large cluster can stain light-colored surfaces, and crushing them releases a noticeable odor.

Their host tree is the boxelder (Acer negundo), a fast-growing maple relative that seeds prolifically along stream banks and disturbed ground. Boxelder trees are common throughout Virginia’s Piedmont, and Colonial Heights sits right where that Piedmont plateau meets the Tidewater plain along the Appomattox River. That floodplain corridor supports dense boxelder tree populations, which means local properties can draw bugs from well beyond the yard.

As temperatures drop each fall, boxelder bugs cluster on south- and west-facing walls to soak up heat before seeking a place to overwinter. They’re looking for any gap they can fit through: cracks in siding, spaces around window and door frames, vents, and utility penetrations. Once inside wall voids or attic spaces, they go dormant until warm weather wakes them up again, often inside the living areas of the home.

How We Treat Boxelder Bugs in Colonial Heights

The fall window matters. Boxelder bugs are most accessible when they’re congregating on exterior walls, before they’ve pushed into wall voids and attic spaces. That’s when a thorough exterior treatment does the most work. We use Integrated Pest Management (IPM) methods, pairing targeted product applications with an honest look at what’s creating the opening for bugs in the first place.

Our products are designed for use around kids and pets, and we cover the full property envelope rather than spot-treating one visible cluster. That coverage matters because boxelder bugs don’t enter through one place:

Foundation and perimeter: Treated along the base of the structure where bugs congregate and probe for gaps
Doors, windows, and concrete seams: Common entry points where frames pull away from the wall or caulk has failed
Eaves and roofline: Overlooked areas bugs use to access attic spaces
Chimney and garage interiors: Secondary entry zones that often go untreated with DIY approaches
Attic: Addressed when bugs have already moved past the exterior barrier

We also identify gaps and cracks that are letting bugs through so you know where sealing is needed after treatment. Whether your situation is a routine fall application or a heavier infestation that’s already gotten inside, we handle both with the same attention to detail.

Why DIY Boxelder Bug Control Often Falls Short

Vacuuming up bugs on the windowsill and spraying soapy water on outdoor clusters will reduce what you can see. Neither approach touches the bugs already sitting in wall voids or behind insulation, and neither addresses what’s drawing bugs to the structure in the first place.

Over-the-counter insecticide sprays have the same limitation. Applied to a visible swarm without also managing entry points, they knock down the surface population while the next wave finds its way in through the same gaps. Sealing and habitat management have to work alongside any spray treatment to support longer-lasting control.

One other common assumption doesn’t hold up: removing a single boxelder tree on the property won’t eliminate the problem. Boxelder bugs travel, and a neighboring yard or the wooded stretch along a drainage corridor can keep supplying them year after year. A treatment strategy that accounts for external sources and focuses on blocking entry can perform better than one aimed at a single host tree.

Prevention Steps Between Professional Treatments

A professional treatment handles the active population and the entry points a technician can access. A few simple steps on your end between visits can reduce how many bugs reach your walls in the first place.

Install door sweeps: Exterior doors without a tight sweep at the bottom are one of the most common boxelder bug entry routes
Caulk window and door frames: Any gap where a frame meets siding or brick is an open invitation, especially on south- and west-facing walls
Repair damaged screens: Torn or loose screens on windows and vents let bugs move straight through
Clear debris near the foundation: Fallen seed pods and leaf litter close to the house give boxelder bugs a staging area right at the wall

These steps won’t replace a perimeter treatment during peak fall activity, but they reduce the pressure on your home and help the professional treatment last longer.
